MP blasts Tory ‘lack of integrity’ over Boris Johnson in maiden speech

DEVON’S newest MP lashed out at Conservatives’ ‘lack of integrity’ in his maiden speech in the House of Commons today, Wednesday.

Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Honiton Richard Foord has hit out at Conservative Ministers for continuing to prop up Boris Johnson.

As part of his speech, Mr Foord said: ‘This is what we are seeing across the country – a groundswell of opinion from people who feel taken for granted. It’s not hard to see why.

‘Yesterday we saw two of the most senior members of the cabinet quit, citing a lack of integrity.

‘It’s time for other members of the Cabinet to heed the message of the Tiverton and Honiton by-election and show the Prime Minister the door.’

He also called for action to build a new high school for Tiverton, highlighting recent remarks by the new Chancellor of the Exchequer during his time as Education Secretary.

‘In his Maiden speech, made over a decade ago, Neil Parish said he wanted to see fairer funding for schools. I note that we are still waiting for action on this.

‘On Tiverton High School in particular, I was pleased to see the former Secretary of State for Education tweeting after the by-election that he had heard local concerns about the School.

‘But now that he is Chancellor of the Exchequer, he should know that my constituents are looking for action – not just tweets.’

He went on to highlight the issues facing local farmers, saying:

‘Farmers in Devon, and elsewhere, are struggling to deal with the rising price of fuel, feed, and fertiliser.

‘I pledge to continue working with bodies like the National Farmers Union to stand up for farmers and ensure they have a champion here in Westminster.’
